The House of Helga Hufflepuff

"You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true,
And unafraid of toil"

~ Sorting Hat (SS) ~

GENERAL INFORMATION
Founder: Helga Hufflepuff
House Head: Pamona Sprout
House Color: Yellow & Black
Emblematic Animal: Badger
Resident Ghost: Fat Friar
Common Room Location: The Hufflepuff common room is located in the basement and can be accessed by a painting hanging somewhere near the kitchens. Like other common rooms, it is decorated with hangings reflecting the house color.

House Trait: Hufflepuff students are known to be hardworkers and are down to earth individuals. They are just, friendly and easy to get along with. Hufflepuffs can be fiercely loyal and would go against anyone for the sake of their friends (Ernie MacMillan of Hufflepuff had gone in bad terms with famous Harry Potter on "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" because he thought it was Harry who attacked his bestfriend, Justin Finch Flechly). Hufflepuffs also tend to be united and would stand together against students outside their house, though they try to stay away from trouble if they can.

Helga Hufflepuff isn't very particular about the qualities of the students that she chooses to accept in her house. This gives the impression that Hufflepuffs are the "left-overs". This isn't the case though. Administrators of this site (Christine, in particular) strongly believes that Hufflepuffs are chosen not by the lack of the qualities that the other three founders favor; On the other hand, it is because they posses more than one of those qualities and that they exist in equal proportion; Not one quality stands out from the rest. Balanced, in other words.

Some of the known Hufflepufss who exhibit the mentioned traits:

  • Cedric Digorry: “Remember Cedric. Remember, if the time should come when you have to make a choice between what is right and what is easy, remember what happened to a boy who was good, and kind, and brave, because he strayed across the path of Lord Voldemort. Remember Cedric Diggory.” --Albus Dumbledore (GoF)
  • Ernie MacMillan: Although a pure-blood himself (his lineage can be traced nine generations back), Ernie was never judgemental about muggle-borns. In fact, his bestfriend Justin was a muggleborn and he stepped in to protect him from Harry Potter whom he believed was the heir of Slytherin during their second year.
  • Nymphadora Tonks: Not even being a respected Auror could stop her from using her metamorposing abilities for her frinds entertainment. She is very bubbly and people seem to like her even at first meeting.
  • The Fat Friar: The Fat Friar is probably the Hufflepuff who can best portrait Hufflepuffs' trait of being fair and kind (which he extends even to Peeves).

HUFFLEPUFF AND THE ELEMENT OF EARTH

JK Rowling associated Hufflepuff to the element of earth.

Earth represents balance and justice. In chinese beliefs, the element earth is associated with the qualities of patience, thoughtfulness, stability and hardwork. These attributes are strongly stressed in Hufflepuff students. In fact, the founder, Helga Hufflepuff was stated to having considered “hard workers most worthy of admission,” and her taking of "the lot" then "treat them just the same” underscores her being fair and just.

Another thing which links Hufflepuff house to the element earth is its house mascot, the badger, a burrowing animal which lives under the ground. In addition, Hufflepuff common room can be found at somewhere in the basement, and generally below ground level. Tunnels lead to dormitories, all of which have round-shaped doors (notice the similarity to a badger sett). Earth is also associated with the color yellow, which is the colour of the Hufflepuff house.
